The Health Benefits of Mad Millie Probiotic Yoghurt

Yoghurt has long been considered the tasty healthier snack alternative to other dairy or more kilojoule laden treats. This may have indeed been the case when yoghurt was still made at home without the many additions seen in commercial products today. Commercial yoghurts have morphed from the usually relatively healthy protein and calcium rich snacks to (in many cases) a sugar laden treat.
Making your own yoghurt isn’t difficult, and allows you to control every aspect of what is going into your yoghurt, starting with your choice of milk (full-fat, skim, soy etc.). The milk choice allows you to control both the macronutrient and micronutrient content that is initially going in to your yoghurt, by choosing milk that is suited to your dietary needs or desires.
Many commercial yoghurt manufacturers fortify their base milk with a cocktail of milk and non-milk solids along with starches, gums, gels, stabilizers, flavours, colours and preservatives. These techniques are generally aimed at improving the viscosity, texture “mouth feel”, shelf-life, colour and flavour. Because we, the consumers, desire sweet products, commercial manufacturers tend to add sugar to their yoghurt. The sugar may not be added as an individual ingredient, but rather as part of a berry/fruit syrup with as much as 60% sugar.
Mad Millie’s yoghurt contains beneficial bacteria from the pro-biotic live yoghurt culture that can aid digestion, eliminate bloating and aid in the bodies immune system. Many commercial yoghurts are pasteurized after the yoghurt culture has been added, to delay spoilage, by killing many of the live bacteria. Therefore the beneficial properties of the pro-biotic bacteria are lost. Mad Millie’s beneficial probiotic yoghurt can be sweetened naturally by adding fruit/berries and/or honey. To increase the viscosity at home without the use of a gelling or thickening agents as done commercially, the yoghurt can be strained through a butter muslin cloth to thicken naturally.
